His work, unique in the Czech (Czechoslovakian) context, has been presented many times in exhibitions and partial catalogues. It was last comprehensively presented in an exhibition at the Museum of Arts and Crafts Council? Great! in 2011. The Pravoslav Rada did not live to see the end of the exhibition, for which, unfortunately, a monograph of the artist's work was not prepared, even though it would have been adequate, necessary and worthy of its significance.

This debt is repaid only by the fully bilingual monograph (CZ/ENG) Pravoslav Rada , published at the end of 2023 by the Alšová South Bohemian Gallery on the occasion of the hundredth anniversary of the author's birth. The monograph is structured chronologically and thematically and in terms of content covers all significant chapters of Rad's work - it presents a comprehensive treatment of his free and used work, creations for architecture including a list of realizations in architecture and an interactive map, it also focuses on his publication and popularization activities in the field of techniques ceramics and for organizational activities. It also reflects hitherto marginalized areas of Rad's work, such as animated films and puppet theater. The monograph contains a list of bibliography and exhibitions , the artist's brief biography in the data and medallions of the contributors.

The graphic concept of the book visually and haptically evokes the medium of ceramics and the specifics of Rad's work. The bilingual processing is enhanced by the use of two basic PANTONE spot colors, which Rada used extensively in his work. The alternation of language mutations is also supported by the variation of the fonts used. Titulkové Denim from the Czech typeface Displaay refers with its characteristic roundness to the morphology of ceramic creation and working with clay. The monograph, containing hundreds of images, is printed on haptically attractive Munken Lynx paper.

PRODUCT DETAILS :

ISBN : 9788076411241

BY (AUTHOR) Authors of the text
Vendula Fremlová, Kryštof Hejný, Milan Hlaveš, Lujza Kotočová, Šárka Radová, Aleš Seifert, Tereza Svobodová, Veronika Vicherková

PUBLISHER :

Alš's South Bohemian Gallery

PUBLICATION DATE :

COUNTRY OF PUBLICATION :

IMPRINT :

LANGUAGE : English

AGE :

PRODUCT FORM : Paperback / softback

DIMENSION :

This book dedicated to Jan Zrzavý will give you a glimpse into the imagination of an artist whose paintings are filled with both modernity and admiration for old cultures, as well as passion and melancholy. Zrzavý received great recognition already during his lifetime. He liked to play with stylising his image - and not only in his self-portraits. He learned from old masters and modern artists such as Jan Preisler and Bohumil Kubišta. He admired the work of Leonardo da Vinci, whose paintings he often paraphrased. Jan Zrzavý bequeathed his extensive oeuvre, including his own art collection, to the National Gallery. These buildings, as places of public life in post-war society, enjoyed generous state support, not only economically, but also politically and legislatively. Our interest is not only focused on their specific typology, but we also look at their educational and emancipatory potential as well as their role as a political tool for the organization and control of free time. The publication also focuses on the search for the roots and program predecessors of cultural facilities created since the 19th century and in the interwar period (association and national houses or workers' houses), with an overlap into the period after 1989, when buildings and their operators had to, and sometimes still have to cope with update demands. The book covers the Czech and Slovak context of the construction of cultural houses, thanks to which it manages not only to cover the entire territory of the former Czechoslovakia, but also to capture different historical experiences.

The texts for the book were written by Jiří Andrs, Jan Galeta, Hubert Guzik, Katarína Haberlandová, Michaela Janečková, Laura Krišteková, Josef Ledvina, Irena Lehkoživová, Henrieta Moravčíková, Peter Szalay, Karel Šima, Jitka Šosová, Lukáš Veverka, Jan Zikmund, a foreword by a leading British historian culture and art David Crowley.
The book is a combination of a professional book and a picture publication with pictures by photographers Oskar Helcel and Martin Netocny, who since their studies at FAMU in Prague toured and photographed cultural houses in the Czech (and subsequently Slovak) Republic. On the subsequent pages, readers are given the chance to familiarize themselves with the various works through short texts and accompanying images. The authors of these texts include not only art historians and curators, but also artists, philosophers, architects, a historian, a theater director, and a writer.
