Nurturing A Love For Reading

Nurturing A Love For Reading

Posted by Bookazine Blogger on

On February 16, Bookazine Social in Tai Kwun was filled with the sounds of laughter and lively discussions as Malaysian writer Maureen Tai teamed up with her friend, librarian, and lifelong reader Beth McNeilly, for an enchanting morning dedicated to one of the most magical aspects of childhood: picture books.

The event was tailored for parents and caregivers of young readers aged 0-8 years, aiming to create a passion for reading from an early age.

The workshop featured a diverse range of picture books, highlighting both classic favorites and contemporary gems. Participants were encouraged to explore various themes and styles of storytelling, as Beth and Maureen shared recommendations that cater to different age groups and interests. They emphasized how reading aloud not only helps develop language skills but also strengthens the bond between caregiver and child, making Storytime a cherished ritual.

One of the most interactive segments of the morning allowed parents to practice reading aloud with the group. Beth provided tips on using expressive voices, incorporating gestures, and making Storytime a dynamic experience. The room buzzed with energy as parents shared excerpts from their favorite books, illustrating how enthusiasm for reading can be contagious.

Attendees left the workshop not only with a refreshed list of must-read picture books but also equipped with practical strategies to make reading aloud a fun and engaging experience at home.

Maureen Tai and Beth McNeilly's workshop at Bookazine Social was a heartwarming reminder of the power of community and shared passion for literature. As participants wrapped up the morning with smiles and new friendships, it was clear that this gathering was just the beginning of many more events aimed at supporting young readers.

Keep an eye out for Bookazine Social's calendar for future events.

And if you missed the workshop, worry not! Below is a curated list of selected and recommended picture books that Maureen Tai and Beth McNeilly highlighted during their session. These books not only capture the imaginations of young readers but also serve as excellent tools for parents and caregivers to make reading time enjoyable and interactive.
