Exploring Hong Kong's New Territories
DESCRIPTION:
From the Author:
I would like to introduce a new book entitled Exploring Hong Kong’s New Territories.
While there is no shortage of guidebooks on Hong Kong they all tread the same weary path of British colonialism, banks, shopping malls, restaurants and tall buildings, most of which are packed into a few square kilometres of the urban area. There is nothing on the bookshelves that explores the New Territories.
This book addresses that shortfall by shining a spotlight on some of the area’s historic monuments and temples. It takes on some of the more family-friendly hiking trails, explores abandoned villages and visits monasteries both ancient and modern. It looks at the continuing development of New Towns, their infrastructure and their impact on the landscape. It also gives detailed information on how everything can be visited using existing public transport.
It is presented in chapters concentrating on specific regions with shorter boxed stories for things that don’t quite fit into the main text. Amongst these, there are stories to introduce some of the more popular deities, about the Hong Kong Unesco Geopark and a retelling of the story of the Yuen Long crocodile, who can now be visited in her enclosure at the Hong Kong Wetland Park.
