About the Author:
Vaudine England was a journalist in Hong Kong and South East Asia for years, working for local newspapers, the BBC World Service, the Far Eastern Economic Review, Reuters, and others. In between trips to People Power in the Philippines and Suharto's Indonesia, however, she was already exploring the homes and archives of Hong Kong's old families and social networks.
In 1998, the Hong Kong University Press published her biography of Noel Croucher: The Quest of Noel Croucher, Hong Kong's Quiet Philanthropist. She has since helped write the history of the Chinese International School and of Hong Kong Land. She has researched and written the only history of The Hong Kong Club, a history of the family-owned Arnholds trading company (over more than 160 years in China), and the biography of Hari Harilela. She also now has a PhD in Asian history from Leiden University, the Netherlands, where she currently lives.
The jump from journalism to history-writing is not a big one, Vaudine argues, as she has brought an obsession with double-sourced facts from one discipline to the other. Throughout all this work, be it for a newspaper feature or a scholarly work, the fun is in seeking truth from facts and engaging with people to find their stories.
This is a wonderful opportunity to connect, learn, and celebrate the vibrant culture of Hong Kong.
We look forward to welcoming you!
