Workshop Teacher & Host:

Michael Kan is a graduate architecture student at Columbia University in New York. He has worked with several prestigious international design firms, including the Danish practice Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) in their London office. His architectural work has earned him multiple international awards, such as the La Coma Gaudí Art Residences Competition and the Tallinn Architecture Biennale. Michael is deeply passionate about urban sketching and founded Paper with Pen in 2021, a Hong Kong-based design company dedicated to celebrating the city’s distinctive cityscape through illustration.

Under Paper with Pen, Michael has developed high-quality drawings that resonate with both local and international audiences. His product line includes postcards, framed prints, and tote bags, all showcasing intricate sketches of the city’s iconic landmarks, such as Victoria Harbour, The Peak, and its historic trams. These creations are now featured in over 60 retail stores, including the M+ Museum shop, Hong Kong International Airport, and Bookazine stores. Additionally, he has collaborated with local businesses on commissioned projects for clients such as Chewy Food Limited, Via Architecture, and Journalize. He is currently publishing a book documenting the ever-changing urban landscape and storefronts of Hong Kong.
